Q: What ports should be open on firewall/router for PPTP VPN to work?

1723 TCP ports should be open, also your firewall/router/ISP must allow VPN/PPTP pass-through for PPTP VPN (equal to allow GRE protocol).
Typical working with embedded Microsoft firewall in Windows, Linksys/D-Link/TP-Link/ASUA Router manufactured after year 2007, ADSL broadband.
If you get error 619 with ADSL connection, please check related settings in your PC’s firewall or your home router’s web configuration pages.

Q: Why PPTP VPN can secure my internet connection?

Once users connect to Free Canada VPN service, the computer or network device is assigned with new IP address and new DNS servers. Since then all Internet traffic is encrypted with 128 bits key and is tunneled to VPN network. From VPN server side, the traiffc is decrypted and allowed to travel to its final destination. Users’ local ISP can only see the encrypted data stream between computer and VPN server. They can’t monitor, sniffer, log or control your Internet usage and you can bypass your ISP restrictions on websites bans.

Q: I still can’t visit some blocked websites after using your VPN service, what is the problem?

The behavior happens under Windows OS because the system is still using your ISP’s DNS to resolve IP address for website hostname. A small Registry changes can solve this problem:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Linkage
3. In the right pane, double-click Bind.
4. In the Value data box, select the “\Device\NdisWanIp” item, press CTRL+X, click the top of the list of devices, and then press CTRL+V.
5. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

Q: I got Error 806: a connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established but the VPN connection cannot be completed.

The most common cause for this is that there is at least one internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow GRE protocol packets.
Verify that protocol 47 GRE is allowed on all personal firewall devices or routers.
Resolutions:
1) if you have a router/firewall, make sure you open TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE).
2) make sure you can reach the VPN server by using ping. Sometimes, poor connection can cause this issue too.
3) You may need to updated firmware on a router or firewall.
4) The VPN server may not be able to get IP from DHCP for the VPN client. So, you may want to re-configure VPN host networking settings. For XP pro VPN host, go to the Properties of the VPN>Network, check Specify TCP/IP address and Allow calling computer to specify its own IP address, and uncheck Assign TCP/IP addresses automatically using DHCP.
5) Make sure other secure software blocks your access, for example, if you use Norton secure software, you may need to add the remote client’s IP so that the client can access.
To avoid the DNS hijacking from local ISP, you can manually configure Google DNS servers for your PC: DNS1: 8.8.8.8 , DNS2: 8.8.4.4

Q: I got Error 721: Remote PPP peer or computer is not responding.

If you have tried many thing other people suggest like rebooting, reloading hardware and re-installing the VPN or dial in connection, you still get the same problem, please check the router settings and make sure TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened. Also make sure that the router has the PPTP enabled and not firewall block the traffic.

Q: Do you allow P2P/Torrent traffic?

To maintain a high quality VPN service and to avoid possible service interruption, we don’t allow P2P/Torrent traffic on Free Canada VPN service.
